Green Certification (Green Technology, Green Technology Products, Green Specialized Companies)

Green certification is a system under Article 60 of the Framework Act on Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth for Coping with Climate Crisis and Article 57 of its Enforcement Decree, and it has three types: green technology certification, green technology product confirmation, and green specialized company confirmation. The competent central administrative agency that receives the application refers it to an evaluation institution, and the joint inter-ministerial Green Certification Committee deliberates and decides whether to certify. Green technology certification requires that the technology falls within a green technology field and that the applicant holds the intellectual property rights or a license for it, while green technology product confirmation covers commercialized products that apply a green technology that has been certified or is being applied for at the same time. Green technology certificates and green specialized company confirmations are valid for 4 years and may be extended once for up to 4 years, and green specialized company confirmation can only be applied for once 1 year has passed since the company was founded.

    Designation or certification after document review and on-site evaluation against the criteria set by the agency. The result depends on the evaluation score or review outcome.

    Decide the purpose and type: Green certification is linked to support for investment in green sectors rather than paying subsidies directly to companies, so decide whether it will be used for attracting investment, bidding or support program evaluations, and choose the type needed among technology, product and company.

    Check the technology field and rights: Confirm that the technology falls within a green technology field under the Green Certification Operating Guidelines and that you hold intellectual property rights such as a patent or a license. If a patent is held jointly, obtain the consent of the co-owners.

    Check product and company requirements: Product confirmation requires proof of production such as a factory registration certificate, direct production confirmation or contract manufacturing agreement, plus quality management certifications, while specialized company confirmation requires proof through financial statements that 1 year has passed since founding and of the share of sales from certified green technology.

    Prepare the application and technology description: Attach the technology description, business plan and commercialization record to the application for the relevant type, making sure the performance figures in the description, the patent claims and the product specifications match.

    Respond to the evaluation: The evaluation institution conducts a document review and an on-site evaluation, adding a presentation evaluation if needed; specialized company confirmation proceeds without an on-site evaluation. The results are finalized after deliberation by the Green Certification Committee.

    Manage the validity period: Certificates and confirmations are valid for 4 years from issuance and can be extended only once for up to 4 years, so schedule the extension application before expiry.

Green certification does not come with direct subsidies, so applying without a clear use, such as attracting investment or supporting a bid or program application, may result only in preparation costs.
