Preparation of application documents for Digital Nomad (F-1-D) visa and change of stay

The digital nomad visa F-1-D (a sub-type of the Family Visit F-1 status) allows foreign nationals who work remotely for an overseas company, together with their families, to stay in Korea. After a pilot period starting in 2024, it has been in full operation since June 30, 2026. Applicants abroad apply for a visa at a Korean diplomatic mission, and those already in Korea under B-1 (Visa Exemption), B-2 (Tourism/Transit) or C-3 (Short-term Visit) may obtain a change of status of stay from the immigration office having jurisdiction over their place of stay under Article 24 of the Immigration Act. The review covers at least one year of employment in the same field, an income threshold that depends on age and region of stay, and private medical insurance with coverage of at least KRW 100 million. Applicants first receive one year and may extend up to a maximum of three years. Employment with a Korean company or for-profit activities in Korea are not permitted under this status.

Procedure type
  • Permit Difficulty High

A procedure that allows a business, activity or stay that the law generally restricts, after review; licenses fall into this type. The authority reviews facility standards, location and consultation with other agencies, and a permit can be refused if the standards are not met.

We will prepare F-1-D visa application materials from embassies abroad or documents for change of domestic immigration status. We distinguish between submission in person at the embassy and submission by domestic visit.

Scope & fee
Prepare overseas mission visa documents for F-1-D
We will prepare F-1-D embassy visa application materials by comparing the evidence provided by 1 overseas remote worker, such as income, employment, insurance, and criminal history. Submission and interview at the embassy are carried out by the applicant himself, and separate application by family members is an additional scope. It does not include in-office submissions.

Check eligibility: Applicants must be at least 18, able to work remotely for an overseas company, and have at least one year of employment in the same field. A spouse and minor children may apply together as accompanying family. Working for a Korean company or doing business with Korean clients is not allowed under this status.

  2. 02

Check the applicable income threshold: The threshold is set as a multiple of the previous year's per-capita GNI: ages 18 to 34 need 1.5 times in the Seoul metropolitan area and 1 time elsewhere; age 35 and over need 2 times in the metropolitan area and 1.5 times elsewhere; with accompanying family, 2 times in the metropolitan area and 1.5 times elsewhere. Staying in Seoul, Incheon or Gyeonggi means the metropolitan standard applies.

  3. 03

Prepare documents issued abroad: The certificate of employment, pay slips, bank statements showing income deposits and the criminal record certificate are issued abroad, so they need an apostille from the issuing country or consular confirmation from the Korean mission there, and translations must be attached to foreign-language documents. Obtaining these documents usually takes the longest.

  4. 04

Take out private medical insurance: Obtain private medical insurance covering both treatment and repatriation for the period of stay with coverage of at least KRW 100 million, and attach the policy and statement of coverage to the application.

  5. 05

Apply for a visa or change status in Korea: From abroad, file the visa application at the Korean diplomatic mission in your country of residence. If you are in Korea under B-1, B-2 or C-3, file the integrated application form for a change of status at the immigration office having jurisdiction before your current period of stay ends.

  6. 06

Alien registration and extension: If you entered on a visa, complete alien registration at the immigration office for your place of stay within 90 days of entry, and before the first year ends, apply for an extension of the period of stay with proof that your income and insurance are maintained, up to a maximum of three years.

The income amount changes every year with the previous year's GNI, and a higher multiple applies if you will stay in the metropolitan area, so preparing income documents to the non-metropolitan standard while staying in Seoul, Incheon or Gyeonggi can lead to refusal.
