F-2-7 Points-Based Residence Visa Change

F-2-7 (Residence) is the points-based type of the Residence (F-2) status under Annex 1-2 of the Enforcement Decree of the Immigration Act. Age, education, Korean language ability, annual income and bonus and penalty items are scored under Ministry of Justice standards, and applicants may apply if they score at least 80 out of a total of 170 points. For the professional type, the current status of stay and residence history in Korea are checked; for the listed-company employee type, it is checked whether the current job falls under managers, professionals and related workers in the Korean Standard Classification of Occupations. E-7-2 (Semi-professional), E-7-3 (General Skilled Worker) and E-7-4 (Skilled Worker) holders are in principle excluded. Income points are calculated on the taxable income in the income amount certificate, not the salary contract, and the change of status is applied for at the immigration office with jurisdiction over the place of stay. Once approved, the holder can work, change jobs and start a business regardless of employment type and may be accompanied by a spouse and children.

Procedure

Procedure type
  • Permit Difficulty High

A procedure that allows a business, activity or stay that the law generally restricts, after review; licenses fall into this type. The authority reviews facility standards, location and consultation with other agencies, and a permit can be refused if the standards are not met.

  1. 01

Confirm the application type: Check the detailed status code on the alien registration card and the residence history in Korea, decide whether to apply as a professional, a listed-company employee, a holder of a Korean master's degree or higher, or another type, and compare the stay requirements for that type.

  2. 02

Review the actual job: For the listed-company employee type, check whether the current work falls under managers, professionals and related workers in the Korean Standard Classification of Occupations. Do not judge by job title alone, and prepare the certificate of employment and job description so that they match the duties actually performed.

  3. 03

Calculate the basic points: Calculate points from the evidence of age, education, Korean language ability and annual income. Income is based on the taxable income in the income amount certificate, so non-taxable allowances, meal allowances and severance pay are excluded; check the gap between contracted salary and recognized income in advance.

  4. 04

Check bonus and penalty points: Check evidence for bonus points such as a Korean degree, completion of the Social Integration Program and volunteer work, and also check penalty or disqualification grounds such as legal violations or tax arrears. Only volunteer work confirmed by official records is counted.

  5. 05

Prepare documents for each item: Attach evidence for each item in the points calculation sheet. Foreign degree certificates need an apostille or consular confirmation, and a TOPIK score report or Social Integration Program completion certificate and proof of the place of stay should be prepared together.

  6. 06

Apply for the change and respond to supplements: After booking a visit on HiKorea, submit the change application and evidence to the immigration office with jurisdiction over the place of stay. If a supplement request is received during review, check the requested items and deadline and submit the missing points evidence or job description materials in time.

If income points are calculated from the salary contract, they may differ from the taxable income actually recognized and fall short of 80 points, so the points should be recalculated with the income amount certificate before applying.
